I miss the old Blogland…

photo

New art – “Sunshine on a foggy day” – January 13, 2013

So I took a break from Facebook today.

I realized as I read through the posts that appeared on my page that many of them just weren’t doing it for me.

I was getting annoyed by some,

bored by some,

and one even made me angry.

Yes, there were a few lovely ones that made me smile or nod in agreement,

but for the most part,

the posts on Facebook today made me feel anything but joyful.

I spend a lot of time on Facebook everyday.

A lot.

I think I am looking for ways to feel connected to others, as I spend a lot of time alone.

But if I go to a pretty hollow place to find connection, doesn’t that mean that the connections I make are pretty hollow too ?

Well, it felt like that today.

So I stepped away.

I am not writing any lines in the sand or anything but I am taking today to try and find more meaningful connections…

My stepping away from Facebook made me think about my blog too.

I have gained so much from having this place to share bits of myself, my art and to give myself and others positive messages about life in general.

I love my blog and I am very proud of it.

And I love my Blogland friends so much !

I do miss the days when there was a lot more comments going back and forth or  the days when the comments were a lot richer.

Facebook has taken some of that away, I know. Instant gratification and in the moment stuff is pretty powerful.

All of that said, I will continue to write and share here, and visit my blog friends at their Blogland homes.

And as for Facebook, we shall see. But a scaling back is definitely in order !

Happy Monday, Beautiful Ones !

I hope you have an awesomely full week !

I'm here. Jodie Foster hit a chord with me last night...she rambled about privacy. I ramble about how Facebook, Pinterest and the Internet in general are taking away a democracy and creating tribes..... But that's another story. I'm with you. Have to keep FB for business....but I am scaling back...keeping to myself...and allowing an air of mystery to return......

Oh Kim. You speak from my heart as well as from your own. That is why I've unplugged from facebook. That is what I miss about blogging...that old back & forth that facebook seem sto have stripped away. I don't mind being absent from facebook and in being "here" instead of "there" I'm re-committing to my blog and pouring myself into that. Maybe if more of us did so things would bloom again in the world of blogging where it is all more context....but that may be a pipe dream.

By the way -- I love this art...it's singing!!! xoxox love you! Wherever we meet!

Oh I really like what Julie said about Facebook creating "tribes"!!!

I do wonder too, how connected we really can be on facebook...it lacks deep, involved with other connection, the doing of life with others we are made for.

Your Sunshine on a Foggy Day is beautiful!

You have a beautiful blog, Kim! And lots of friends and followers you love your thoughts and art, and you.

Facebook has never appealed to me - I felt a little left out of the "Creative Sistahs" when I heard there was more posting to Facebook than blogs. Reading your comments make me think I made the right choice.

this was written perfectly kim. i find myself on FB, well ONLY because that's where everyone has gone to and it makes me sad, too. i want blogging to be what it was "back then" too.....

i fought FB for as long as i could...and then i realized i needed those connections, too....i really needed them...but would i rather have them here, absolutely!!

i'm not sure how we change what technology and the world has gravitated to....actually, we probably can't....but we can stand behind our blogs proudly, just like you're doing!!

way to go kim!!

love you sweet friend !!

I completely agree with you! I am not on Facebook. I prefer my blog and the blogs of others. Coming here to visit you is always fun and inspiring, and it seems more personal.

Facebook does have a certain emptiness to it!

I love blogs and do miss the intense commenting that used to go on a few years back :(

Still, I love my blog too and love to visit yours, so maybe blogs will make a comeback! Here's hoping!

Don't stop blogging Kim!

I gave up facebook as well, noone saying anything nice, only complaints and people telling me they were headed to the grocery store.... I haven't been blogging long enough to miss the old, but i agree blogging is a kinder, more inspiring place than Facebook, at least for me. And the etsy community in some of the groups and treasury making groups, s very active and i have never heard anything but positive comments. I Am addicted to making treasuries there and the Other shop owners have been so kind and generous! I feel like i know some of them just like blogging! Don't stop blogging, you would be missed, take a break if needed but then come back!

Kim, I'm with you! I've cut my FB time down by a lot and my *online* time down also. I have to work on my yarn stash! I love "Sunshine on a Foggy Day". Love the colors. Hugs--

Love you, and your beauty, and your blog. I hope it's always here as it always inspires me. Especially on the days when I need it most. xo

I totally agree with your facebook assessment, it's either promo everything of rants that seem to go on forever....I do love visiting the blog world and seeing what friends are up to and watching the blossoming that you never see on facebook, or rarely anyway. Love your painting and it's rich detail, maybe that's what facebook is missing, the real deal. xox

Thank you Kim, for this wonderful post! I have never been on FB but yes, I've noticed a decline in comments over time on my blog as well as others. I love what you said about connections, too as I also spend much time alone - working from home. It's gloomy and raining and foggy here today so I especially like your artwork.

Me too, Kimster, me too. I don't blog much any more and hesitate to post on FB because - get this - it's too widely seen by all my "friends". Blogging was for some "real" friends and my fellow bloglanders. I'm still on the fence about all of this but I do feel the similar kind of dilution with FB. Just limited my time social media has been really good for me.

Oh I think you're hit the nail on the head with this post!
Facebook did keep me away from my blog most of last year and I don't want this to happen again. I miss the good old blogging days...

I am in exactly the same place Kim! On Sunday I nearly deleted my FB account. It has been a very empty place to hang out .... but I do have some dear friends I would hate to part with. I went through my friends list and created an acquaintance list as a sublist (which narrows everything down drastically in my newsfeed) I like it much better now. I haven't been blogging too much because it's just been so DREARY - and I haven't had ANYTHING to share. But it's not just about posting something - it's about making the rounds too - which I forgot how much I love that. So here I am - saying hello friend!

A timely, thoughtful post Kim. Something so many of us are thinking about and contemplating. I am compiling a list of art/craft/creativity blogs to post on my blog and already have over 300. Your blog is one of them. I am hoping that this might be a small step of reconnecting via the beautiful world of blogs -- like the good old days!

Hi Kim, I've recently been questioning it all..facebook and blogging. I really, miss the connections that I had thru blogging several years ago. Most bloggers that I originally connected with have either stopped all together or have gone on to a more "business" style blog. I completely understand the logistics of this but miss the personal touch these sites used to have, and have to say that I've stopped following most of them.

I know nothing stays the same and life is all about change...but I'm just not sure where I fit into it all anymore. I love the connections I've made, but have been giving it all some thought...to continue or not. Thanks for bringing up this topic.

I have to say, I keep Facebook for the friends I know from school or work. I don't mix my crafty life with my "normal" life. I just don't feel like Facebook is a good platform for that kind of thing. To me, you can't beat a blog for interaction.

Hi Kim, I found your blog through Tammy at Daisy Yellow. Your certainly not alone in these feelings. Me too. Last summer I went back to work and needed to scale back some. It was really easy to give up Twitter and Facebook. Facebook makes me really grumpy lately so I set up a way to see just the art related mostly. Even that didn't really do it. I spend my online time on blogs and I am glad to have found your!

Dear Kim... I so appreciate what you say here. I have had a hard time with my blog lately. I just discovered that some comments are held as spam, so I missed them, it has become hard and cumbersome and the work to get it out into the world is more than I can give... Facebook is rapid and feedback instant... and that makes me think about what a junkie I am for immediate gratification. What I want to do is be out in the garden and into my art and create and have connections of bringing beauty and sharing in the beauty from others, like here and our other links throughout bloglandia... so I don't know what to do about it and long for these connected interactions around the world from our fingertips. Thank you for giving us these ideas to ponder...
